Connecticut Broadleaf,
One of the most common and perhaps the most important cigar tobaccos (commonly referred to as Broadleaf).
Broadleaf has originated in the Connecticut River Valley – where it was primarily used as a cigar wrapper.
It has some of the wider leaves in the tobacco species (hence the name) and it produces veiny/oily leaves that are among the most priced in the tobacco industry.
Broadleaf is the most priced tobacco in the tobacco world where it is mostly used as a cigar wrapper. It is also used for other parts in a cigar blend.
The plant grows to a bushy, squat plant and it produces a large quantity of usable tobacco. It grows particularly well in high sun locations – Broadleaf also grows very well in the shade creating Connecticut shade tobacco – this is done to produce thinner leaves of better quality that will be destined exclusively for cigar wrappers.
Use and Flavor:
Commonly used as cigar wrapper.
Broadleaf has a mild medium bodied flavor.
It carries earthly, nuts, light vanilla undertones and is slightly salty.
Growth:
This tobacco grows to >4.00 ft in high quality soils, the leaves it produces are >30″ and >15″ wide, and cure to a beautiful brown/leathery color.
It is a high yield plant and it grows quickly in good soil and climatic conditions.
It produces white, bell-like flowers, with a pinkish/reddish hue at the petals.
Fast maturing plant –Â 60-100 days (flowering to harvest).
